-A Shining Affliction: A Story of Harm and Healing in Psychotherapy
GET TO KNOW ME
Yu-An Wang, LMHC (WA), LCPC (CA), NCC, SEP™, MA, a Taiwan-born Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Seattle. I completed my graduate training for psychotherapy in Northwestern University in 2015 and has worked for different community-based social service agencies to improve the well-being of the minority population for more than 10 years. I am trained in psychodynamic, interpersonal, Somatic Experiencing®, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, multicultural, social justice focused approaches.
My specialty includes depression, anxiety, work stress, relationship, family of origin, anger issues, trauma, high sensitivity, cross-cultural communication, micro-aggression, systemic discrimination, and first-generation struggles.
I enjoy psychotherapy as a way to help people because I have this precious opportunity to witness people's strength and resilience growing from within in the therapy space all the time! Sometimes the world makes us feel small and helpless as if there is nothing we can do about it. And yet, I see so many people still fighting for themselves and their beloved ones; trying to heal their psychological wounds; working to cope with the side effects that come with the survival strategies; and thriving with their reborn freedom and reclaimed agency. Physical wounds can heal and grow scars to make skin stronger for protection through delicate care. Psychotherapy works in the similar way with psychological wounds. Our end goal is to help you become more able to cope with your whatever you have been through. In order to achieve the goal, we work together and find the best way for your healing.
SERVICES AND FEES
My regular counseling fee is $170 for individual therapy and $60 for group therapy with sliding scale available. I am currently accepting Aetna and First Choice Health. I will also be able to provide the superbill for you to claim the out-of-network reimbursement.
In addition to mental health counseling, I also provide career and executive coaching with $220 per session. This option would be best for people who encounter obstacles in their work life without sufficient mentorship or guidance and would like to seek out professional advice.
Below are the therapy models I currently provide:
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
Weekly one-on-one therapy sessions for you to talk and process your issues with the sense of relieving your feelings and emotions that you might not be able to share with other people. Sessions are conducted through HIPAA-compliant Google Meet video chat platform.
Currently accepting new clients.
Somatics Healing Group
Every Wednesday 3pm to 4:15pm
Somatic-oriented healing takes time for our body to change and integrate when we encounter stressful and traumatizing events. Thus, this Somatics Healing Group is a commitment to create time and space over 20 weeks/6 months for us to explore, understand, and befriend with our own nervous system.
In each session, we will have an intention related to somatics and trauma healing to initiate and engage with our conversations. At the same time, there will be guided exercises and practices for us to connect with our body. This will help us build a safe container together to gently work on and work through our trauma responses and survival strategies. And we get to have a choice about what kind of life we wanna lead from now. The design is inspired by Systems Psychodynamics, Somatic Experiencing® and the Polyvagal Theory.
At the same time, this group is still a here and now process group! We will also have the opportunity to explore our relationships to ourselves, our interactional patterns with others, and the roles we take up in a group setting. Companionship and witnessing is the key for healing, not just because we might share some similar life experiences to empathize with each other, but also because we hear and we see our differences to know that the world is much bigger than we think and we can have much more options to loosen our stuck believes and become more flexible and resilient.
Time TBD and the fee is $60 per visit. Insurance and sliding scale are available!
CAREER COACHING
If you encounter some obstacles in your work life, such as communication difficulty with your manager or coworkers, confusion about your career path, difficulty exercising your authority to set your own boundaries, difficulty regulating your emotions at workplace, and trauma or damage related to work and work environment etc., and you do not see yourself as a candidate for some mental health help, career coaching would be an option for you to explore constructive solutions to overcome these obstacles together with me. The focus will be on communication, assertiveness, advocacy for yourself, exercising authority and leadership.
I enjoy coaching clients to find their voice and determination in their work life, especially related to systemic oppression at work place, like sexism and racism as I apply intrapersonal, interpersonal, and group-as-a-whole perspectives to examine your difficult situations and find solutions that work best for you.
Most clients I work with so far are female professionals in leadership position in consulting, technology, and healthcare industry, and both female and male software developers in a multicultural work environment.
Somatic Experiencing®
As a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner, I am providing Somatic Experiencing® personal sessions to work on traumatic experience. Different from traditional talk therapy, Somatic Experiencing® focus on how our body experience and respond to traumatic event. It's not the traumatic event we want to focus on, but the impact of the trauma event in our body, including sensation, image, behavior, affect, and memory.
This is not a psychotherapy and therefore is not covered by insurance. $170 per session.
