Group therapy is a supplement to individual therapy when clients feel ready to explore more or need more support in their lives. Group therapy offers a place for members to share familiar experiences with other members, which facilitates healing. Moreover, group therapy creates a space for members to experiment and apply what they have learned in their individual therapy to here and now setting.
I would call group therapy a semi-reality setting as they can get some real interactions with other members while have the group therapist's support. As a bridge between the individual therapy and the reality world, group therapy might seem stunning or scary to some folks. It thus is my job as a group therapist to promote empathy and support for the holding environment and facilitate positive feedback in the group to help members relate to each other. Through this process, members also get the opportunity to reflect on their relationship patterns in their own life experiences.
